Students Expand Their Education Through Community Involvement (1/25/12)

Community involvement and philanthropic work is part of the curriculum and culture at Federico Beauty Institute. These events are great ways for our students to expand their education, learn valuable life lessons along the way, and earn hours toward graduation.

2011 was a very charitable year for Federico Beauty Institute. Nearly every month, the students went out into the local community to participate in various events and fundraisers.  The students and Student Council helped with the selection process. They helped choose some very generous and deserving organizations to donate their time to last year.

The first event of 2011 that Federico Beauty Institute students participated in was the second annual Manicures for a Cure event at the University of California Davis campus. A group of 14 students volunteered at the day-long event and all of the proceeds that were made from the manicures were donated to St. Jude's Hospital to help fight pediatric cancer.

The following month, Federico Beauty Institute hosted a mobile blood drive in the school parking lot. The students helped register 46 donors and collect over 32 pints of blood in the Blood Source mobile unit.

In April, the esthetics and cosmetology students volunteered to do the hair and makeup for the Styles of Paradise charity fashion show at Sacramento State University. The show highlighted the work of student designers and stylists in the Sacramento area. All of the proceeds were donated to the Autism Center for Excellence.

In May, Federico Beauty Institute students provided over 200 haircuts to homeless men, women, and children as part of the Project Homeless Connect event. They did the same for foster families at the Lilliput Health and Wellness Fair in June and again for homeless veterans at the Vietnam Stand Down event in September.

In October, Federico Beauty Institute students and staff participated in Sacramento's Making Strides against Breast Cancer 5K Walk. Team Anne, in memory of Anne Federico, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2005, was one of the top 15 fundraising teams.

In addition to all of the monthly events, Federico Beauty Institute also partnered with Mustard Seed Children’s Home and WEAVE. As part of the partnership, the needy women and children who use their services were invited to the student salon to be treated to complimentary services.
